Exactly What Is A Tomtom Drum

A tom-tom drum is a type of drum originally used by Native Americans. It was traditionally used as a form of communication. This type of drum has evolved into an essential piece of band equipment. Tom-Toms can be defined as any type of drum in a drum set that does not have a snare.

History

Original tom-tom drums were made of a hollow wooden cylinder with both ends open, or sealed on one end and open on the other. Animal skins were then stretched across the opening and tied down with leather straps to seal the drum.

Size

These drums can be made in a variety of sizes. Usually, the rule is: the larger the drum, the lower the pitch.

Types

Bongos, conga drums, high, low and floor toms are all different types of tom-tom drums.

Uses

Tom-Toms can be played by striking the drum your hands or with sticks.

Fun Fact

Tom-Tom is not actually a Native American word. It is an old British word for a child's toy.
