Begin A Drivein Theater

Start a Drive-In Theater

Drive-in theaters were all the rage in the 50s and 60s. They provided a large screen to watch a new movie, food and drinks and a semi-private location for dating. While not as common as they once were, drive-in theaters still have a fan base willing pay you, and can be a lucrative business.

Instructions

1. Find a location that has some drive-by traffic but that doesn't have too many outside lights within close proximity. You need enough land for the screen, the concession stand and the cars to park. You must check the zoning on the land to ensure that you can operate a drive-in theater business at that location.

2. Build the facility. You need to have all proper building permits. Install the number of screens that you want to use. Create the ramps for cars to park. You must also build a concession stand and an office to house the projectors and radio equipment.

3. Secure the property with a large wall around your facility. You also need to have a traffic plan that considers emergencies. Build ticket booths and, if necessary, install gates to restrict access.

4. Negotiate films. Getting the newest released films can be a difficult thing to accomplish. The level of difficulty depends on how many theaters in your area want the film. It also can depend on how much you are willing to pay to get the film. You must have a film budget and be ready to settle for films that are older in order to have films to show.

5. Get your licenses and permits. You must make sure that the legal aspects for opening and operating a business are taken care of before you open.

6. Create a menu for concessions. Your food service needs to be one of the main sources for income. You need to offer food that is worth the price your customers pay; otherwise they will bring their own food and drinks from home. Consider offering a meal plan or package deal.

7. Obtain a radio station. You must have the sound system worked out prior to opening. Most drive-in theaters acquire a radio station to broadcast the sound.

8. Open for business and advertise. You may want to show your first week of movies for free in order to attract new customers. You still make money off of your concessions and have the chance to work out any problems before people start paying.
