Mix Stitch Supplies For Novices

Just a few supplies are needed to get started in cross stitch.

Cross stitch is one of the simplest embroidery styles. With just a few supplies, you can get started in this craft. You will need a needle and thread, special cloth for cross stitching, scissors and an embroidery hoop.

Needle

For many cross stitch fabrics -- especially those that are best for beginners, like Aida cloth -- a sharp needle is unnecessary. A blunt ended needle is a good beginner's choice. A gold eye tapestry needle in size 18/22 will work well for most beginning projects.

Thread

Most often, six-strand embroidery floss is used for cross stitch. Often, a pattern calls for separating the strands, so it is important to buy the right kind of floss. "Craft floss" usually can't be separated and is not used for cross stitch.

Scissors

Any pair of scissors will do to cut your embroidery floss when needed. It's nice to have small sewing scissors or folding scissors that can be tucked into the pocket of a small sewing bag, but this is not necessary.

Embroidery Hoop

An embroidery hoop holds fabric stiff so that it can be worked more easily. You will need one if the fabric you are using is not a stiff type especially made for cross stitch.

Hoops come in different materials and sizes. The material of a hoop -- metal, plastic or wood -- is a matter of personal choice, but the best size will depend on the project. If possible, choose a hoop that is slightly larger than the design planned, so the entire pattern will show inside the hoop.

Sometimes, embroiderers use hoops to frame their completed work. If you plan to do this, consider a colorful hoop that coordinates with your planned design.

Fabric

Cross stitch is done on "evenweave" fabric. This weave creates little squares in the cloth that create a block for the stitches. There are many different types of evenweave cloth. Aida cloth is best for beginning cross stitchers. It is stiff and does not require a hoop.

The "count" of the cloth is also important. A higher count will create a smaller finished design and a lower count will create a larger one. Choose the cloth that is best for your intended project.

Cross stitch fabric also comes in many colors. White or ivory are probably the best for beginners, as darker colors can make the holes in the fabric harder to see.
