The Very Best Black Female Artists

Female musical artists continue to make names for themselves.


The best black female musical artists represent a broad spectrum of talent. Differing in age and experience, these women share the gift of musical talent. Many accomplished black female artists grace radio stations and music television channels. It takes a special woman to stand out as an exceptional musical artist, especially when the music industry seems to spit out more and more beautiful, talented women each year.


Beyonce


Beyonce led the band Destiny's Child, before becoming one of the world's most successful solo artists. Beyonce set a record in 2010, taking home the most Grammys in a single year by a solo female artist. Her career tally of the prestigious Grammy is 16. With a stash of highly sought after awards already under her belt, Beyonce Knowles continues to rack up coveted honors for her accomplishments and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Earning a spot in Forbes' Top 20 highest-paid men and women in Hollywood, Beyonce brought in an impressive $85 million in 2010.


Alicia Keys


Discovered in Harlem at the young age of 14, Alicia Keys' career quickly took off. The singer and songwriter's music reflects her training in piano and her jazz and hip-hop influences. Having earned Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, MTV Awards, Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards - just to name a few -- Ms. Keys is also a philanthropist. She plays a significant part in the fight against AIDS in both children and adults. Keys teamed up with several non-profit organizations and brought together music legends such as Bono, Paul Simon, David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz to promote HIV and AIDS awareness and raise funds.


Tina Turner


Tina Turner, born November 26, 1939, boasts a career in singing and songwriting spanning over 50 years. Known as "The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" her record sales top 200 million and she holds eight Grammy Awards. Turner took a break from her European retirement to offer a lively performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. At the age of 68, Tina -- sporting a slinky silver outfit -- teamed up with 26-year-old Beyonce Knowles and brought the crowd to their feet during a memorable performance of "Proud Mary."


Aretha Franklin


Recognized by her trademark soulful voice, Aretha Franklin -- also called "The Queen of Soul" -- is a singer, songwriter and pianist and has won 18 Grammys. Born in 1942, Aretha has sold more than 100 million records throughout her long career. Rolling Stone magazine gave Aretha Franklin their highest honor -- Franklin was ranked No. 1 on Rolling Stone's "The Greatest Singers of All Time" list.
