Visit La

Los Angeles is an amazing city, but can be overwhelming to visit. Many visitors are intimidated by L.A.’s sprawl and freeways. However, with a little planning, L.A. is a navigable and pleasant city to visit. Make sure to balance cultural activities and Hollywood tourism with time in the sun to get the full Southern California experience. Follow these easy tips to have an unforgettable time in LA.

Instructions

1. Rent a car. If you are only in L.A. for a limited period of time and want to see things that diverge from the typical tourist trajectory, a car is essential. Most major car-rental agencies have offices at LAX, and you can find specials online when you book your airline tickets.

2. Book a hotel somewhere where you can walk around and get a feel for the neighborhood. There are many hotels in downtown Los Angeles, but despite urban revitalization there, it can still feel desolate. Old Town Pasadena and Santa Monica have a local feel and are great places to stay when visiting L.A. These areas are unique because there is a high concentration of shops, restaurants and other amenities all within walking distance. Pasadena is a charming city bordered by the San Gabriel Mountains and close to downtown Los Angeles. It is the home of the Rose Bowl and the Norton Simon Museum of Art. Santa Monica is a seaside city on the west side of L.A. The Santa Monica Pier and Third Street Promenade are major attractions for out-of-towners and Angelenos alike.

3. Do the tourist routine. Visit the Getty Center (a stunning Richard Meier deigned museum located in hills of Brentwood), Hollywood and Vine (famous corner by the Kodak theater that is the center of Hollywood tourism), Griffith Park observatory (stunning views of L.A. and comprehensive space and science displays), and the Santa Monica Pier.

4. Go beyond the tourist routine. Explore L.A.'s natural splendor by checking out hikes and outdoor activities in the surrounding areas. There are beautiful parks around Malibu/Topanga Canyon, and the Angeles National Forest is not far from downtown L.A. Topanga Canyon is convenient to the west side of the city and Santa Monica. There are 36 miles of trails and ocean views in Topanga State Park. Mt. Wilson, a popular peak in the San Gabriels, is convenient to the east side of Los Angeles and downtown.

5. Explore L.A.’s art scene. Los Angeles may be known primarily for its film industry, but it has a burgeoning art scene and a wealth of art institutions. Pick up a local paper, like LA Weekly, or an art guide, and visit L.A.’s galleries, museums and collective spaces.
