Make Renaissance Footwear

Renaissance shoes are necessary for authentic historic costumes, renaissance festivals or theater costumes. Knowledge of sewing is important to completing the project so find help if you do not sew well. These renaissance shoes are not particularly sturdy for everyday wear but will hold up for minimal use.

Instructions

1. Trace your feet loosely onto two sheets of paper with a pencil. Allow for a wide toe box. Label each foot pattern and cut them out.

2. Trace the feet patterns onto felt and cut them out. Trace the same feet patterns onto the suede pieces and cut them out. Pin the felt foot and suede foot together around the edges, with the felt piece on top.

3. Drape a piece of paper over the top of the foot to the floor. The paper should hang over the foot, much like the top of a slipper. Draw an outline onto the paper where your foot meets the floor. Do this for both feet and label and cut out the patterns. Pin the patterns onto the felt and cut them out.

4. Wrap a strip of paper around the heel to where it would join the upper shoe pattern. This should be a long, rectangular strap, cut just below the ankle. This is the heel of your shoe. Cut the patterns out and trace them onto the felt. Cut the rectangles out.

5. Set the paper patterns aside. Sew the felt upper and heel strap to the felt and suede sole. This will create a kind of sock or interior for your shoe.

6. Cut the leather upper and heel out of leather using the patterns. Pin the leather to the outside of the inner felt sock and sew the pieces together to complete the shoe.
