All books used to write a paper should be included in the bibliography.
When kids write a research report for school, most teachers will require that they turn in a bibliography as well. The bibliography includes information about each source, both in print and online, that the child used in researching and writing about the topic. Some teachers may provide guidelines on write and format the bibliography, but if they do not, kids should follow some basic rules to adhere to proper form..
Instructions
1. Find the author of the book, article or website. In a book, the author's name is listed on the title page. Some articles and websites may not list the name of the author. If you found the author's name, write down the author's last name and first name. If there were two authors, include both names with "and" between them, and use a comma between the names of any additional authors beyond two. If there was an editor instead of an author, write "ed" after the name of the editor. Put a period at the end of the author section.
2. Write the name of the article if you only used part of a book, magazine, newspaper or encyclopedia to help you research your report. Put quotation marks around the name of the article and put a period inside the quotation marks.
3. Write the title of the book you used. Italicize it and put a period at the end.
4. Include information on the publisher and date. For books, write the name of the publisher, a colon, the city in which the book was published, a comma and the copyright date. You can find all of this information on the page facing the title page. For magazines and newspapers, write the date of the publication, the volume and issue number, and the page number on which the article can be found.
5. Write the web address and the date on which you accessed the website for any online sources you are including in your bibliography.
Formatting
6. Type "Bibliography" at the top of a new page and center it between the left and right margins.
7. Format the page so it is double spaced. Do not skip lines between items in the bibliography.
8. Set a hanging indent of five spaces, which will indent any line after the first in each entry in the bibliography.
9. Arrange the items in the bibliography in alphabetical order by the first letter in the entry. In most cases, this will be the last name of the author. If there is no author and the title of the book or article starts with an article such as "a," "an," or "the," alphabetize it by the next word in the title.
10. Make sure that titles of books and movies are italicized and that each entry in the bibliography ends with a period.
