Print Wire Markers

Print wire markers in your own home.

Whether you're installing electronic components in your home or workspace, it only takes a few devices for the number of wires to get overwhelming. Instead of fumbling for wires and tugging on them to see where they go to, you can outfit them with wire markers. These markers are little flags that clearly show you what each wire is for. Plus, you can print them at home using a standard inkjet printer.

Instructions

1. Buy a pack of clear wire labels or clear mailing labels, in 8.5-by-11 inch sheets. Labels will come in different sizes and shapes. Decide on the label that will best fit your needs. If the label is large, remember they can be cut to size.

2. Obtain the template for your labels by visiting the manufacturer's website. Most label makers will provide a downloadable Word document for the labels they sell. If no template can be found, email the manufacturer directly and request a copy.

3. Start your copy of MS Word or OpenOffice and open the template for your labels. Fill in each of the labels with the information you want to label your wires with. If using mailing labels, keep the labeling text on the left or right side of the label, leaving the middle and opposite side blank.

4. Load your labels into your printer. Follow all loading directions for your particular printer. Avoid overloading the printer's paper tray with too many sheets of labels. Printing one or two sheets at a time will lower the chance of paper jams.

5. Click "File" from the menu bar and select "Print" to open the printing window. Confirm your paper size is set to 8.5-by-11 inches or letter size and click the "Print" or "OK" button.

6. Remove the label sheet from the printer and locate the wires you will mark with the labels. Peel the label you will use and wrap around the wire, making a flag marker. Repeat this until all wires have their correct markers.
