Begin A Publication

Instructions

1. Decide if you want to appeal to a large audience or a distinct group of people. If you want to target the mass market, you must locate and appeal to a very large group of people, which can be costly in the beginning.

2. Learn what your target audience wants to read and design the publication around them. You can learn this by studying your competitors and finding out what the audience enjoys about the publication, but also what the audience wants that the current publication doesn't have. Create this publication, keeping cost in mind as well.

3. Expect that you will lose money. The amount will range anywhere from thousands to millions of dollars. You will begin earning money when your casual readers convert to faithful, regular customers. In order to transition your casual readers into faithful readers, you must develop new products that appeal to their needs on a regular basis.

4. Establish a relationship with your advertisers. They are a primary reason some readers may purchase your magazine. Pay attention to the advertisements you include in your publication, as they may compromise your publication's integrity.

5. Provide your current readers with new products and services. Since it will be an extension of your current publication, it will cost you much less to advertise and expand to your readers. Additional products can consist of books, spin-off magazines, trade-shows and online databases. This will secure the relationship you have with your readers and advertisers for continued success.
