Give garage doors a shiny coat of paint.
You probably don't give too much thought to garage doors. Some people may barely notice them. But there they sit, right in front of your house for the whole world to see. The concept of curb appeal is based on what someone sees while standing in front of a home and garage doors play a major part in that. Give garage doors --- and your whole house --- a face lift by refinishing them.
Instructions
1. Combine water and dish soap in a bucket. Dip a sponge into the soapy water and scrub the doors to remove any residue. Rinse the door with clean water and let it dry for two to four hours.
2. Remove loose paint with a paint scraper. Hold the paint scraper firmly and push away from you to remove the paint.
3. Sand the doors with 100-grit sandpaper. A palm sander will sand the doors much quicker. Attach the paper to the sander and apply gentle pressure to the doors. Sand the entire door, focusing on uneven areas.
4. Apply primer with a roller and a brush. Choose a primer that is formulated for the type of garage door you have. Metal and aluminum doors require a metal primer. Prime the entire door. Use the paintbrush to reach areas that a roller can't reach. Allow the primer to dry for two to four hours. If you can still see the original finish through the primer, apply a second coat.
5. Paint the garage door with exterior latex paint. Use the same techniques that you used to apply the primer. Multiple thin coats of paint will look more even and will be more durable than one thick coat. Apply two to three coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry for one hour before applying the next.
