For guitar players interested in a diverse set of sounds, special effects pedals are a critical tool. A collection of pedals for different effects are kept together in "pedal boards." A pedal board is a portable collection, usually in a hard case, that a guitar player can take to practices or gigs. Cables are a vital part of planning your pedal effects board.
Instructions
1. Evaluate what you need. Consider what length of cables you want to go to the amplifier, and to the guitar from the pedal board. Your board-to-guitar cable is probably going to be the longest one, and the length you want depends on a lot of factors. Figure out how much of a "leash" you're going to need when playing.
2. Sacrifice quantity for quality. You want to use short cables for spaces between pedals, amps, or other equipment when possible. Using shorter lengths allows you to buy higher quality products and lessens the chances of problems inside the wires.
3. Use special hardware for your board. One really useful piece is a "male/male" 1/4-inch plug, a metal piece with two prongs, eliminating the need for a cable. Pedals that rest directly beside each other can use these double-prong devices for quick and easy connectivity.
4. Make sure all of your cables are the right size. The standard for all guitar-to-amp or board connections is the 1/4 inch plug. Check for compatibility with your equipment.
5. Keep the receipts. In case you have to return cables for any reason, know the rules on your purchases. Otherwise, you may be stuck with a bad buy.
