Make a silhouette
A silhouette is a black and white outline of a person, animal or objects. Silhouettes of children or pets are framed and hung as decorative folk pieces. Making a silhouette requires a little patience and a steady hand. Silhouette making is a fun activity to share at a child's party or in a classroom. As long as your subject is willing to be still, you can make a silhouette. Store it in a scrapbook as a keepsake or hang it proudly on a refrigerator.
Instructions
1. Seat your subject in a chair next to an empty wall. Turn the chair sideways so the subject is sitting parallel to the wall.
2. Remove the lampshade from the lamp. Place the lamp on a table in front of the subject. The light should cast a shadow on the wall behind the subject.
3. Move the lamp around to adjust the shadow as needed.
4. Hang up a piece of paper, lengthwise on the wall next to the subject. The paper should show the subject's shadow in detail.
5. Add a bit of tape to the top and bottom of the paper to keep it in place.
6. Outline the image of the subject with a sharp pencil. Do not bear down hard. You might tear the paper. Outline the head, neck and shoulders.
7. Turn off the lamp and remove the paper from the wall carefully.
8. Cut the image out of the paper with sharp scissors. Lay the cutout on a piece of black construction paper.
9. Trace the image on the paper with a sharp pencil. Cut the image on the black paper out with sharp scissors.
10. Lay the black image on a piece of white paper. Double-side some tape and stick the image to the paper.
