Since their introduction in 1989 by CompuServe, animated GIFs have been extremely common on the Internet, used by businesses and the public alike. The old format was widely accepted not only because GIFs were already popular, but also due to the ease of download by even the slowest modems. Even though animated GIFs are now a somewhat dying art, there are still plenty of sites dedicated to the first image format that supported animation, and equally plenty of ways to download free animated GIFs.
