What's Neo Poly Dex

If your dog or cat has eye irritation, contact your veteranarian.

Veterinarians use the ointment Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic to treat dogs, cats and horses for conjunctivitis, corneal injuries, scratches, radiation exposure and other serious eye conditions. In general, it is useful in the treatment of bacterial infections, inflammation or swelling in association with an infection. The brand name is Maxitrol. If any of your pets show symptoms of eye irritation, consult your veterinarian right away.

Features

Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic is a strong blend of the antibiotics polymyxin B and neomycin. It also includes the corticosteroid Dexamethasone. Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic is only available by prescription from a veterinarian in the form of eye drops or an ointment. The blend of antibiotics kills bacteria and the steroid reduces inflammation.

Precautions

Whenever you apply this medication either in drop or ointment form, you should wash your hands thoroughly before and after use. When handling the tube or dropper, it is important not to let the opening touch any surface including your hands. The opening is sterile and if it comes in contact with any material it can contaminate the product and cause an eye infection. You should leave the medication at room temperature and not expose it to moisture or heat.

Side Effects

Although side effects are not common, there could be instances of burning, irritation, redness, eyelid itching or swelling. Some light sensitivity is possible. If you see any side effects are occurring such as swelling or your pet is scratching at the eye area, consult with your veterinarian. Don't stop treatment without the recommendation of the doctor.

Considerations

If the dog, cat or horse has a known allergy to the ingredients such as a reaction to steroids, you should not give the medication. Do not give it to cats with the herpes virus. You should notice results within 48 hours. Consult with your veterinarian if there is no improvement or symptoms get worse.

Other Medication

Make sure your veterinarian is aware of any other medication your pet is on such as the steroid prednisone. Other drugs may interact with Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic. Also discuss with the veterinarian or pharmacist any non-prescription medication your pet is taking.

Cost

As of May 2010, the general cost for the ointment or the drops is in the low to mid-$20s range.
