Crafts Using Pop-sicle Stays

Save Popsicle sticks to create some great crafts.

Popsicle sticks, or craft sticks, can be purchased in bulk from craft stores or they can be recycled from cool summer treats. Online sites also sell these sticks, both in bulk and in kits. A multitude of crafts, both simple and complex, can be constructed using Popsicle sticks and everyday craft materials. A bundle of craft sticks can be the beginning of decorations, boxes, picture frames and more.

Decorations

Popsicle sticks can be used to create a wide variety of decorations. Gluing the sticks together can form a range of animals and shapes, such as birds, sleds, stars and more. One your shape is completed, paint it, then add chenille stems, foam, felt, buttons and pompoms for details or decorate it any way you choose. Add some yarn or thread as a hanger and you can hang your decoration in a window, as a mobile or any place you wish.

Boxes

Gluing craft sticks together with plain white glue can form boxes that can be used for gifts, for jewelry or for storage. Be sure to plan your design so that you have enough sticks available. Place glue on the edges of the sticks and stack them accordingly. Once the glue has dried, paint the box and decorate it with glitter, markers, stickers or other items to individualize the box. These make great gift ideas for children to give to parents, grandparents or teachers.

Signs

Stacking Popsicle sticks together to form a square or rectangle shape creates a simple sign base. Decide on the size you need and start gluing. These can be crafted as ornaments, gift tags or even as place cards for special dinners. Allow children to embellish the signs to create a one of a kind door sign.

Picture Frames

Another ideal craft for children is to make photo frames from Popsicle sticks. Use a plain piece of paper as a template of the size of the picture you will be framing. Glue the sticks end to end to create a frame of the correct dimensions. Once the glue has dried, paint or decorate the frame as desired. Attach it to the photo when it’s finished and add a hanger or stand.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks can be created using one single craft stick. Paint the stick a color of your choosing and then add embellishments such as pompoms, small wooden shapes, buttons or foam shapes to give the bookmark added appeal. Create a dog, angel, frog or other type of design using your imagination and materials on hand. Personalize the bookmark by writing the name of the reader down the length of the Popsicle stick.

Pencil Holders

Popsicle sticks can be glued together to create a unique pencil holder. Glue the edges of the sticks together in a box shape, add foam or cardboard for a bottom and decorate as desired when the glue is dry. Another way to make this craft is to use a tin can and glue the Popsicle sticks around the can. This eliminates the need to craft a bottom for the holder and gives the item a little more stability.
