Top Football Tunes

Many great songs have been written about football.

Baseball may be the national pastime, but Americans have a love affair with football. That explains why there are so many great songs that are either about football or that have become associated with the sport.

"The Super Bowl Shuffle"

"The Super Bowl Shuffle" has to be considered the top football song of all time. It was a rap song recorded by several famous members of the Chicago Bears in 1985 before the team won Super Bowl XX. The cast included Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary and William "Refrigerator" Perry. The song won a Grammy nomination for best Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance---Duo or Group. That was a first for a sports team. The song spawned many parodies, and in 2010 many of the cast members reunited to do an updated version that became a 30-second ad for Boost Mobile during Super Bowl XLIV.

"Are You Ready for Some Football?"

Hank Williams Jr. wrote "Are You Ready for Some Football?" for "Monday Night Football," based on his 1984 hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight." The reworked version is probably more famous than the original because of the popularity of "MNF." Williams continues to introduce "MNF" each week with this song, which gets fans fired up for the game ahead.

"Waiting All Day for Sunday Night"

Not to be outdone by "Monday Night Football," NBC's "Sunday Night Football" brought in Faith Hill to sing the now-famous "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" introduction each week. The song is a takeoff of Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself For Loving You."

"Rocky Top"

There are many great college football fight songs, but none is better or more famous than the University of Tennessee's "Rocky Top." The country bluegrass song was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1967. After big wins, the Tennessee quarterback directs the school's band in "Rocky Top." Famous alum and NFL star Peyton Manning has been known to belt out the tune at bars during rare moments of unwinding.
