Once you've learned to dance, it's time to get out there and show what you can do. There is no shortage of dance studios that offer lessons in all styles of ballroom dance in the Houston area and many of them have public dance nights to give students an opportunity to practice. You don't have to be a student, however, to give it a whirl. Whether at a social club, dance studio or dance club, ballroom dance is a fun and exciting social activity.
The Melody Club
The Melody Club is social club that offers group classes in various dance styles, including country western, lindy hop, swing, ballroom and salsa. Tuesday nights are dedicated to ballroom social dance, with an open dance taking place from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Students participating in the club's ballroom dance lessons get free entry, while the cost of admission for walk-ins (who are welcome) is $6.
Chandelier Ballroom at SJSPT Lodge #88
Lodge #88 belongs to the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, a society organized in 1897 to promote benevolence, humanity and brotherhood in the immigrant Czech community. Founded by Czech farmers in Houston, it continues to provide a cultural reference point for generations of Czech immigrants. The Chandelier Ballroom serves as the location for Saturday dances featuring a live band. Ballroom nights alternate with western and polka throughout the month. The public dance is from 8:30 p.m. to midnight; admission is between $8 and $12 per person, depending on the night.
Dancing City
Dancing City is a ballroom hall offering group and private dance lessons and private rental for dance competitions, special events and public dances. The large ballroom space is ideal for dance events, rehearsal space or showcases. Every Saturday, Dancing City holds a public dance night from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Cost of admission is $10 and the event is open to both couples and those without a partner.
The Dance Place
The Dance Place is a dance studio located in the Galleria area of Houston that offers dance classes in all styles of ballroom dance. The studio holds a regular Friday night open public dance for social ballroom dancers. The cost of admission is $5 and the hours are from 8 to 10 p.m. The public dance is open to both couples and singles.
