Fresh paint A Chilly Wall With Oil Based Fresh paint

Oil paints can be used to paint walls as well as latex, but they do have a longer drying period.

Painting the interior of your home is one of the most economical ways to remodel your home. Repainting the walls and trim can allow a new and fresh look to a space that is already comforting and familiar to you. Oil paints can be used to paint cold walls as well as latex, but oil paints will have a longer drying period.

Instructions

1. Sweep the walls and trim with a soft bristled brush. This can be a paint brush or broom, but there should be no dirt, dust or debris on your wall before you paint. Make sure the paint is at room temperature by bringing it indoors overnight.

2. Mask off the trim and carpet right next to the wall you will be painting. You should only use masking tape as any other tape you may use will have a stronger adhesive that will strip the paint from the trim. Also, if there are any windows in the wall, you will need to mask the edges of them as well.

3. Open the can of oil primer, such as Kilz, using the five-way tool, and stir the primer with a paint stick. This will alleviate any separation that may have occurred from the time the can was sealed to the time you open it. When the wall is cold, this will help the paint to dry faster, but the paint will not set if the paint is at room temperature. You can try to warm up the wall with a dry heat, such as lamps if desired, but it is not necessary.

4. Use a paint brush to "cut in" the wall. This means painting a smooth border around the wall next to the masking tape. This will help you get a more professional look to your wall.

5. Complete the priming of the wall by using the roller and paint pan to finish covering the wall in primer. Allow 24 to 48 hours for the primer to dry. Oil paints and primers take longer to dry than water-based paints, so if you use a thin coat of primer, it will take at least 24 hours to dry. Drying time increases with the thickness of the coat.

6. Follow the same steps that you used to apply the primer to apply the paint. If you are using patterns or a two-toned painting scheme, then you will need to mark off the appropriate areas and mask if necessary. For example, if you were going to create a stripped pattern on a part of the wall, you would need to mask off the area that the first color will not be applied and paint the first color, allow the color to dry before removing the masking tape.

7. Store the paints if you are not completely done painting by soaking the brushes in paint and place them in the paint pan and then covering the paint pan with cellophane wrap.
