Acrylic sheets are lighter weight and less breakable than traditional glass.
Frames made from acrylic sheets, or Plexiglas, provide some of the clearest views. Acrylic looks invisible because of its non-glare quality; you can paint it or leave it clear. It is lightweight and durable; so if your kids or pets crash into it, it is much safer than a glass frame. These are inexpensive and relatively easy to make. Use these frames for any photo or document. This craft is geared more toward adults, but kids may have fun decorating them. Acrylic sheets can be used to display the photos in a number of ways.
Instructions
Wall Frame
1. Use the measuring tape to measure the board and picture or document you want to display. Mark the dimensions on the acrylic sheet with a marker or paint. Allow two extra inches in each direction.
2. Cut through these markings with a box cutter. Work it in a sawing motion. When the pieces are the correct size, use sandpaper to smooth down the edges of the acrylic. This material is not sharp.
3. Center the picture, collage or document on one sheet of acrylic. Apply small marks to the four corners. Now make a dot between the picture corner and the corner of the acrylic sheet. This is where you will drill.
4. Drill a hole to secure the sheets of acrylic together. Go slowly for the best results. The friction will cause it to become hot.
5. Make sure the acrylic sheets are clean before sealing in your picture. Remove smudges with glass cleaner and rag.
6. Use double-sided tape to secure the display items onto the first sheet of acrylic. Lay the other sheet, realigning the drilled holes.
7. Add the bolt, then the washer and nut to the other side. Add hanging wire with another screw in the back of the frame.
Acrylic Frame Key Chain
8. Drill a hole through the top corners of two wallet size acrylic sheets.
9. Cut picture to size; you will need doubles. Use double-sided tape and stick them back to back.
10. Lay them on one sheet. Apply acrylic cement to the perimeter. Add the other key chain piece on top, lining up the drilled hole.
11. Add key chain attachments to the holes. These make great gifts. Painting with a layer of decoupage glue adds color to both frames and key chains.
