Film With Strobe Lights

Several different methods can be used for filming with strobe lights.

Film directors use many different methods for filming with strobe lights and this opens up the number of potential options for getting the look you want while filming. The best method for filming with strobe lights can vary depending on what your goal is. Many directors will use one method for a party scene while using another method for a horror movie scene. The tools available to film makers allow for a wide array of strobe light scenes to be played.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of effect you want on the film. A horror movie aiming for suspense or terror will want to mess with the shutter speeds the most while a rave party scene will focus more on having strobe lights attached to the cameras. Once you decide on the intention, you can prepare the film equipment accordingly.

2. Check the settings for your camera's shutter speed. Slower shutter speeds lead to larger flashes that take up more time on the film while faster shutter speeds will result in more shorter flashes being captured on film.

3. Experiment with strobe light speeds. Most strobe lights will come with multiple speeds and settings and taking short shots with the lights at all three speeds can help to give you an idea of what the film will look like at each light setting.

4. Practice shooting with the strobe lights attached to cameras instead of in the scene itself. See how this compares to the other methods.

5. Choose the one option, or combination of options, which bring the desired effect to life. Each scene and setting will react differently to strobes, making experimenting critical to finding the perfect set up.
