Homemade License Plate Reflector

Homemade License Plate Reflector

License plate reflectors are important safety additions to the backs and fronts of cars and especially motorcycles, as they let other vehicles know where you are whether you are driving in front or behind them or are parked on the side of the road. While store-bought reflectors are available, they are easy to make yourself.

Reflective Tape

Buy reflective tape at a hardware store or auto parts store and affix it to the area around your license plate or on the license plate itself. This reflective tape typically comes in silver, yellow and red colors, as those are the colors people pay the closest attention to. Don't obstruct any of the information on the license plate. Long strips are probably best around the edges, as it will catch other drivers' attention more quickly than small pieces stuck haphazardly around the license plate. This reflective tape will hold up in a certain amount of rain but heat can make the adhesive melt and peel away from the metal. Therefore, it may need to be replaced over time.

Pieces of Mirror

Create a reflector by taking broken pieces of mirror and gluing them around the license plate. This can be turned into a fun crafts project, as the pieces of mirror can also be made to look attractive, funny or cool. Add beads or funny plastic figures along with the pieces of mirror to make your plate unique and memorable. Attach them with Super Glue.

Christmas Lights

Christmas lights can be run through the car off the car's electricity itself, through the car, under the seats and into the trunk and be run around the license plate. When they are plugged in they will create light around the license plate, illuminating it and making it stand out to other drivers on the road. This may be difficult to wire depending on the car you have and your knowledge of its electrical system. Also the seats might not pull up easily to allow you to run the lights from the front to the back of the car. Also make sure the lights don't put undue strain on your battery.
