Make Picture Mats

A framed photograph can benefit from a matte.

A family photo hung on a wall or displayed in a living room can add a warm feeling to the space. However, a matted family photo can look even more elegant and sophisticated. You can make a mat for your personal photo using some basic materials and tools, which saves on having a photo professionally matted at a picture shop. Plus, the matting project uses some tools you may already have on hand, saving even more money.

Instructions

1. Lay a photograph flat on a table. Measure its height and length using a ruler to get its dimensions.

2. Purchase a piece of photo matting that matches the size of the frame you want to use. Lay it flat on a table and draw a rectangle in the center of the matting, matching the height and width of the photo dimensions you took, minus one inch all around.

3. Cut out the traced rectangle from the matting, using a utility knife. Discard the cut out piece.

4. Lay the matting against the glass of the frame you're using. Place the photo against the matting, and secure in place with a piece of painter's tape along each side of the photo. Put the back of the frame in place.
