Sing Correctly

Singing is a common and enjoyable activity for plenty. Whether it's a passion or just for fun, singing properly is VERY important. Singing improperly can lead to problems such as severely damaging your vocal chords or passing out. Here are a few basic tips to follow when singing.

Instructions

1. First of all, a good posture always helps in bringing out your voice. It lets your diaphragm expand properly. You may have heard of the term "singing with your diaphragm". Singing with your diaphragm simply means to sing from your stomach. That way, you won't be singing with your throat (singing from throat stresses it out) or singing through your nose (gives you a nasally sound). To sing from your diaphragm, take a deep breath. During your deep breath, your shoulders should NOT move up. The breath should be only expanding your stomach (such as how you breathe when you sleep). A deep and proper breath of air should give you much power to use your voice strongly. A good breath of air will definitely help you sing properly.

2. Another thing people tend to do when singing is that they keep their throat closed. Singing with your throat closed gives you a _ sound.

Singing properly means your throat is open. To sing with your throat open is like yawning. When you yawn, you can feel the back of your throat lift. That part is called the soft palette. Lifting the soft palette will give you a much more opened and full sound.

3. Going back to posture... it doesn't mean just to stand straight. That is significant too, but remember to keep your chest out, shoulders relaxed, and don't tense your knees! Many people tense their knees to keep straight but that can cause dizziness and fainting! It's good to keep your knees relaxed and a little bent. Also keep your feet shoulder

width apart to maintain a good and confident posture. A good posture also helps enable better blood circulation.

4. Now that you've got your posture and proper breathing down, it's time to warm up your voice!

Don't start out singing songs with extreme ranges and intervals! Even singing automatically comes simple to you, it is still important to warm up your muscles (just like an athlete).

To warm up, practice singing scales such as your DO RE MIs. That way, when you actually sing your song, you won't strain your voice from jumping from all of the ranges. Vibrating your lips while humming

(like doing a rasberry) may seem childish, but it does help loosen up your muscles.

5. And there you have it! The basics of singing properly. Doing so may take a lot of practice, especially breathing properly. Just remember these things and eventually you will be doing it all just naturally. Have fun singing!
