Instructions On Moving An Infant Grand Piano

Get some help to move your baby grand piano safely.

Your baby grand piano is probably the largest and most expensive piece of furniture in your house. The smallest baby grand pianos weigh about 500 lbs., so you will need some help disassembling and moving your piano. Use some basic piano moving instructions to secure and protect your piano and to move it safely.

Instructions

1. Remove the music stand, pedal mechanism and soundboard lid and lid prop. Wrap each piece individually and place the smaller pieces in a storage box. Label the small hardware pieces with masking tape and marker.

2. Lock the piano cover if possible, and place a rolled furniture pad on top to keep it from moving or getting scratched. Cover the rest of the piano with furniture pads, using large rubber bands or tape to keep them in place.

3. Have two movers stand near the left side of the piano and hold the corner up while another mover unscrews the left piano leg. Wrap the piano leg in a furniture pad, and label it with masking tape and marker; some piano legs are not interchangeable.

4. Position a piano board with its raised brace near the piano keyboard and parallel to the flat side of the piano. Tilt the piano left corner first onto the piano board. Remove the other two legs, wrap them individually in furniture pads and label them. Secure the piano by fastening the piano board straps together.

5. Tilt the piano onto a dolly and hold it while wheeling it to its next location or to a truck with a lift gate. Use the piano board as a skid and an extra stabilizing strap if the piano must be moved up or down stairs. Pad the stairs to prevent damaging them.
