Letter Stencils

Letter stencils are a very useful tool for anyone who needs to apply words on to another object; this includes scrapbooking projects mailboxes and signs.

What is a Letter Stencil?

A letter stencil is basically the outline of a letter through which you can apply ink, paint or any other media to leave the shape of that letter on another surface. Letter stencils are available in many different materials, sizes, fonts and even languages. Not only can you purchase letter stencils you can also make your own. To save money on craft projects many people make not only letter stencils but other shapes and designs.

Uses

Stencils can be used to put names and addresses on mailboxes instead of using decals. By using reflective paint with the stencil,on your mailbox you will have a neat address that can be seen day or night. Another use for stencils is making invitations, greeting cards and scrapbooks. Artists and designers use stencils, often on fabric, walls and even people. Every home should have at least one set of letter stencils somewhere around the house to use for any projects that may arise. Children can use stencils for many school projects, and they can also be used for labeling tools and other items around the house.

Why Use Stencils?

Stencils enable you to measure, layout and create perfect letters in a uniform size and pattern. Anyone who has ever tried to write large letters on a poster board knows how hard it can be to keep the letters uniform. With a stencil, you can fit on many more words and have it look much better than if you're trying to write them by hand. Since you can find stencils in just about any design or size you choose there is no need to ever have messy handwriting on any project, no matter how large or small.

Where to Get Letter Stencils

You can find stencils at just about any hardware store, department stores craft stores and many online places where you can download print and cut your own letter stencils. Since there are so many choices in stencil styles and sizes, it can get expensive if you do a lot of projects and have to buy a full set of letter stencils for each different size or font needed. However, the stencils you purchase tend to be made of heavier materials and will last longer than ones that you print on plain paper.

Use Letter Stencils

The first thing to do when using stencils is to lay them out in the format you want. Use a ruler to ensure that the letter stencils are straight and even. Once you have the stencils where you want them secure them in place with a little Scotch tape. Now fill in the open spaces of the letter stencils using whatever medium you choose, from pencils to spray paint. After all the letters are filled in, carefully remove the stencil to reveal your letters.

Measuring and taping are the main points to remember when using letter stencils, because once it is done you can't always just erase one letter and rewrite it as you could in regular handwriting. Using letter stencils effectively can require a little practice, but when you get used to them they are a great tool for all sorts of projects.
