Foam board is a lightweight, sturdy material that is commonly used as backing for displays in school and business projects, and for framing photographs and paintings. It is also used to construct arts and crafts projects that include everything from holiday decorations to photo cubes and pencil holders. Specialized tools are available that can easily cut circles, bevel edges and create grooves to make your project easier and more professional looking.
Straight Cutter
This tool has a flat plastic base that slides along the foam board with a blade that cuts straight lines. The blade can be adjusted for different thicknesses of foam board.
Straight/Bevel Cutter
Not only does this tool make straight cuts, but the base can be rotated to allow the blade to create beveled cuts. As with the straight cutter, the blade can also be adjusted for different thicknesses of foam board.
Circle Cutter
Holes of various diameters can be created with a circle cutter. It is composed of a blade attached to a rotating arm which can be lengthened or shortened to increase or decrease the size of the circle.
V-Groove Cutter
Two opposing blades positioned at angles with tips coming together permit clean, straight cuts for projects that require groove cuts.
Freestyle Cutter
This cutter is designed to allow freedom to follow any line and cut a variety of shapes.
Hole Drill
Unlike the circle cutter, this tool operates like a regular drill and has interchangeable tips with varying diameters that make creating different size holes easy.
Rabbet Cutter
With two blades positioned at right angles to each other, the rabbet cutter creates joints that allow two or more foam boards to be connected together.
Industrial Tools
For jobs that require cutting and shaping numerous large pieces of foam board on a commercial scale, machines with specialized blades are used to make the job quick and easy. Some industrial requirements also utilize water jets to cut foam board.
