Computer graphic designers use a variety of tools to communicate messages visually. Some of these tools include animation, color, illustration and print layout. There are a variety of software programs that graphics designers can use for their work. These programs have improved the speed at which these professionals can complete their projects. Although the designs are created with the use of computers, computer graphic designers still need to have creative talent and the ability to make sketches by hand. Computer graphic designers can choose to work for a company or for themselves.

1. Take basic courses in art and design. Many accredited schools will not allow formal entry into their bachelor's program unless the applicant has studied these basic courses for at least a year. They usually require applicants to show proof of artistic ability, such as the completed projects from these courses. These basic courses can be taken at a high school or a community college.
2. Earn a degree. Although it is possible to learn graphics design on your own, opportunities for self-taught graphic designers are rare. You can increase your chances of securing a computer graphics design job with a degree. Some schools offer an associate's degree in design, but most entry-level jobs require a bachelor's degree.
3. Learn to use popular software packages. Computer graphic designers use computer programs to plan, analyze and create their designs. Some of the popular programs are Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Quark Express.
4. Prepare a portfolio. You will need to have samples of your work to show potential clients what you can do. Designers who have not acquired professional experience usually build their portfolios from mock designs and school projects.
5. Find clients. While designers who are employed by large firms receive assigned work, self-employed designers have to advertise their services to get clients. Freelancers employ a variety of techniques to promote their services, including referrals, newspaper ads, the Internet and cold calling.
6. Keep learning. To stay competitive in the design industry, you will need to be familiar with new graphic software, updated software and new practices or techniques in the industry. It might be necessary to take occasional classes to update your skills.
7. Visit the National Association of Schools of Art and Design for a directory of accredited schools offering courses in graphic design (see Resources below).
8. Use resources available to professionals in the design industry. The American Institute of Graphic Arts is a professional membership organization for design that represents students, professionals and educators. It provides a variety of benefits, such as professional resources, job listings and information on events and competitions (see Resources below).
