Write A Skill Exhibition Proposal

Craft your art exhibition proposal as carefully as you do your art.

Art exhibits -- particularly the openings -- are exciting cultural events and opportunities for artists to showcase their work. A typical art exhibition proposal requires a cover letter, a CV, an artist statement, an exhibit proposal, an image list, an exhibition proposal and images of your work. "There are more artists than there are galleries, so it is important to have an impressive art exhibition proposal if you want to make an impression. Galleries make their living by commission, so they want to book the best exhibits they can," says Pamela Blondel, a former art gallery owner.

Instructions

1. Find a gallery that specializes in the sort of art and style you are proposing for your exhibit. A place that is known for traditional paintings likely won't be interested in your art exhibition proposal of glass bead jewelry.

2. Follow the gallery specifications to the letter. Some galleries will even tell you how they want your art exhibition proposal bound. Failure to follow exact procedures will result in your proposal not even being considered.

3. Draft your art exhibition proposal. Use active verbs such as "compose," "conceptualize" and "formulate" to describe your work. Leave your draft for 24 hours, and return to it with a fresh eye.

4. Ask a friend with good editing skills -- one with art exhibition proposal writing experience would be perfect -- to review your proposal and make suggestions. Provide your editor with the specifications of the gallery so she can check it against the requirements.

5. Print your art exhibition proposal on good quality paper. Let's face it, galleries are "snobbish" places, and they are concerned with image. You don't want to downgrade your proposal with the wrong stationery, so go for good quality.

6. Deliver your art exhibition proposal in person, and see if you can get to talk to the owner. Human connection, particularly for small galleries, will help you get your foot in the gallery.
