Fashion illustration is the first step in creating the perfect outfit. Many fashion illustrators primarily work on drawing their designs and never feel compelled to have the clothing they create on the page made. However, each aspect of the drawing deserves adequate attention, including the hair. Learn draw hairstyles for fashion illustration and make your next fashion drawing chic from head to toe.
Instructions
1. Start by flipping through fashion magazines and checking out the latest trendy hair styles. Pay attention to any trends that catch your eye and mark it in the magazine to return to as a frame of reference when you begin to draw. Remember that hairstyles in fashion illustration can be just as important as the clothes or accessories.
2. Find a sketch pad that you can use to draw different hair ideas. Try to only use as many strokes as you need to give the general idea of the hairstyle you are trying to create.
3. Determine if you will draw a male or female head and proceed in sketching your head style accordingly. Male heads should be more square through the jaw, whereas female heads should be more oval and angular through the cheeks. Make broad yet fairly soft strokes using a pen or soft lead pencil to give the impression of hair without spending too much time making many individual strokes.
4. Steer clear of adding too much shading to the hair since it will bog down your illustration and take focus away from the main focus of your drawing, (which will ultimately be the clothing or general aesthetic of the piece.) Over-exaggerate the hairstyle to emphasize the stylistic quality typical of fashion illustration.
5. Be creative with the hairstyle and don't be afraid to use your imagination. Add accessories or even make the hair down to the floor to give a sense of drama to the illustration. Consider going back and adding bold color strokes to the hairstyle to create a high fashion editorial look.
