The fees for portrait painting, as for many commodities, can vary within a wide range, from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands. An experienced and talented painter who specializes in portraits of world leaders can command commissions as high as $100,000. 1. Determine the size and medium of the work. A larger canvas will cost more. Oil painting techniques are more demanding of time, skill and materials than acrylics, watercolors or pastels.
2. Determine the complexity of the painting. Detailed realism will require more study than an impressionistic rendering. Decide whether the picture will include just the head and shoulders, a three-quarter figure including the hands or a full body scene with a large background. The number of figures and other elements should be accounted for in the fee as well. The more elements included, the greater the amount of skill and planning needed to complete the painting.
3. Determine whether the painting will require live sittings or photographic reference. Live sittings can require more personal attention, travel, accommodations, and time.
4. Evaluate the painter's level of experience, skill and reputation.
5. Determine the current regional market rates. Some areas support higher rates due to competition and simple supply-and-demand issues.
