So you want to work for the Smithsonian Institute? This article tells you make that a reality. 1. If you're like most people you've visited or thought of visiting the Smithsonian Institute. The best way to get to know the work environment there is to go there. But if you can't do that, pull up a chair and visit the Human Resources page at http://www.sihr.si.edu/index.htm. Click the SI Careers Tour tab and browse all of the positions to find on that best suits your skills and education. For instance, a curator will have a Ph.D in the discipline that relates to the area she oversees. She will also lead a team to find new exhibits, which in some cases, could be worth millions of dollars. The Smithsonian also has several administrative offices that include government affairs and general counsel.
2. Next click on the job vacancies and browse available jobs. If you find one where you meet most of the criteria, proceed to the application process.If not, bookmark the site and check it periodically until you find something.
3. The Smithsonian works through USAJobs to receive applications and resumes. In order to submit an electronic application, you must create an USAJobs account. You do so by selecting "apply online" on the job listing.
4. You'll be asked to fill in your name, address, contact information, citizenship status and if you are a veteran.

5. It's time to build your resume. You'll be asked to fill out the same information as in the previous section, plus you'll be asked if you want the information to be confidential. That's up to you, but it seems to get more attention if it is readily available. You'll then be prompted to fill out work experience, education and any job-related training you have had.
6. Check all information for errors and submit. If this is the first resume you have created, you will have to go back to the Smithsonian job listing and click on it again.
7. After you've submitted your resume, you will be directed to the Smithsonian's Tracking and Applicant Referral System (STARS) application. Answer the series of questions to the best of your ability.
8. Submit the information and print the fax cover sheet, which contains an ID number. Keep for your records, or if faxing, include it with the other items.
9. Wait to be contacted.
