Slow Dancing Couple
Whether you are preparing for a school dance like Homecoming and Prom or you just want to brush up on your slow dancing skills there are a few tips to set you on the right track. Slow dancing is both fun and intimate and in order to keep from stepping on your partners toes while moving to the music employ these helpful hints to make your dance one to remember.
Lessons
Unless you are an expert at dancing, taking a lesson or two to get you started will help you immensely. Many local organizations such as the YMCA and private dance companies offer various types of dance lessons that you can attend. Go alone, with a friend or significant other to the class and learn the proper moves and postures for slow dancing. Dance teachers will guide you through each step, help you when you have a problem and will point out the mistakes you are making and the areas you need to improve. Sometimes it can be hard to gauge what exactly you are doing wrong, and a professional instructor will be able to pinpoint your problem, help you solve it and make you a better dancer.
Practice
Once you have figured out what kind of slow dance you want to do, practice the steps at home alone or with a friend. If you are practicing alone, try dancing in front of a mirror and take the steps slowly so you can monitor how you are doing and catch your mistakes. If you choose to practice with a friend, pick one that may have dance experience or is at least more proficient than you are so she can help you in mastering those dance steps. You can also purchase instructional dance videos that will aid your practice and help give you confidence in your steps.
Posture and Eye Contact
Posture and eye contact are two of the most important aspects of slow dancing. If you are hunched over and staring at your feet all night, it will not matter whether you are making the right steps or not. Slow dancing is about having fun and being close to the person you are dancing with, so remember to stand up straight, keep your arms strong and look at your dance partner while you move. Chances are your partner will be so impressed by your confidence that they will barely notice if you make a mistake.
