Create A Dinosaur Figure

Create a dinosaur figure using plaster of Paris.

Making a dinosaur figure is a project kids will love. It is easy to make with plaster of Paris and may be use for as a present, paperweight or room decoration. Plaster of Paris is a safe product for kids to work with since it is from powdered gypsum. The gypsum is broken down to powder and then rehydrated to make it solid again. Working outside will make cleaning up easy.

Instructions

1. Locate a toy dinosaur from either around the house or at the local toy store.

2. Place modeling clay in a container such as casserole dish. If using a container such as a box, wrap the inside with plastic to prevent leakage.

3. Flatten the clay out in the container to the thickness of the dinosaur toy.

4. Grease the dinosaur with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil and lay it down flat on the modeling clay.

5. Press the dinosaur down about half way in the clay. Gently lift out to make a detailed impression of the dinosaur left in the clay.

6. Mix the plaster of Paris mix according the manufacturer's directions, normally this is about one part water to two parts plaster.

7. Pour the mixture over the dinosaur's clay impression until it is level with the top of the clay.

8. Let set overnight and then carefully remove the dinosaur figure from the plaster.

9. Paint as desired using acrylic or poster paint. Let dry.
