Execute A Grapevine

Perform a Grapevine

The grapevine consists of a series of side steps. It is used to bridge together other steps in dances such as ballroom, club and folk. The feet and legs will cross in front or behind each other when you perform a grapevine sequence. The grapevine sequence will only head in one sideways direction. This is typically used in a dance routine to get the dancers to another part of the dance floor.

Instructions

Perform a Grapevine

1. Begin by coordinating with your partner which foot to start on and where on the dance floor to incorporate the move. Partners will head in the same direction but with opposite feet, because they should be facing each other.

2. Hold your arms out and to each side while dancing with your partner.

3. Position your head and upper torso to face the direction you will be heading. For example, if you are moving to the right, your head and body should be slightly turned towards the right, while your partner's natural opposite is the left.

4. Decide how extended you want your side steps to be. The more space between your legs and crossovers, the more dramatic the effect. During competitions you will want to add more drama, but when dancing for fun, small crossovers are easier.

5. Bend your knees and extend your right foot to the side.

6. Lift your left foot forward and to the right crossing over the right foot in front.

7. Repeat the extension of your right foot to the side. And cross over in the front with your left.

8. End the sequence with a twirl, dip or other fun dance figure move.

Perform a Grapevine Variation Sequence

9. Begin on your right foot by extending it sideways, taking a smaller sized step.

10. Take your left foot and extend it sideways, crossing over the front of your right foot (be careful not to cross over too far). The left foot's heel should be quite near the right foot.

11. Extend your right foot a smaller step to the side again.

12. Bring your left foot behind the right foot, stopping at a point where the toe is just past the heel of the right foot.

13. Repeat this process until you reach the end of the sequence.

14. Finish with a dip, twirl or turn and repeat the grapevine steps in the other direction.
