Suggestions For Using Vellum

Vellum is a beautiful translucent paper, originally made from untanned calfskin. Today a paper vellum product is available. It is often used for diplomas, certificates and special documents. This paper is also popular for a wide variety of crafts. Scrapbooking and card making are wonderful crafts for using vellum. Vellum has a tendency to show the adhesive through the paper, so it is better to stack or attach over the vellum using brads or other layers of card stock. You can also apply the adhesive to the card stock and wait until the adhesive becomes tacky before adding the vellum. With the popularity of paper crafts in recent years, vellum has been discovered in many other genres other than scrapbooks and cards. The following instructions are for three vellum craft projects that will help make a special dinner even more special.

Instructions

Votive Candle Shade

1. Cut three 4-inch squares.

2. Mark four dots, spaced evenly apart, on one side of a vellum square. Repeat on the opposite side of the square. Paper punch each of the marks. Repeat for the other two squares.

3. Apply the reinforcement labels over the punched holes on both sides of the vellum.

4. Cut a 1/4-inch slit in the center of each vellum square.

5. Take apart a silk flower bud, leaving you with single layers of petals. Place one petal over a slit and insert a brass brad through the petal center and slit. Fasten the brad on the back of the vellum square. Repeat for the other two squares.

6. Cut an 18-inch piece of ribbon. Place two squares with the backs together. Starting at the bottom, lace one side of the square sides together. End with a bow and trim the ends.

7. Cut two more pieces of ribbon. Open the laced squares and position the other square between, matching the unlaced sides. Lace both sides of the square to the other two.

8. Place the vellum shade over the candle holder.
