Sometimes it is difficult to get the proper look for a costume with just cloth and thread. Sometimes, you must look outside the box at new techniques to get just the right look. Latex casting is one such method, and if executed properly, can create a really convincing result.
Instructions
1. Place the clay on the armature and sculpt your armor in 3D. This is a very straightforward manner of creating armor, as this model is what you will make your mold from. You will want to make sure that everything on the clay model is exactly how you will want the latex to look once it's molded, as once you pour plaster all over it, editing is no longer possible. This first step takes time and practice, so dont get discouraged if things dont look exactly the way you want them to at first.
2. Create the mold. Taking your completed sculpture, mix and pour the plaster over the pieces that you want to turn into armor. You should apply plaster several times, as you don't want the mold to crack. A minimum of 3-inches is required for large pieces; smaller can be no less than an inch thick. Reinforcing the mold with strips of tough fabric or plaster bandages is also highly recommended.
3. Remove the dried mold from the armature and pour the latex in. You will want to make sure that all areas of the mold have an even amount of latex spread over them. Irregularities can cause the armor to tear when you remove it from the mold.
4. Remove the latex from the mold. Trim the areas around your armor piece, and paint to desired effect.
