A paint sprayer gets the job done more quickly than rollers and brushes.
The Wagner latex paint sprayer is an airless model designed to spray latex, oil-based paints, stains, varnishes and sealers. Airless sprayers produce very little overspray and mist in the air. Wagner sprayers are equipped for small to large jobs with a paint capacity of 1 quart to 5 gallons, depending on the model. Most sprayer problems are due to improper paint thinning, improper pressure or incorrectly sized spray tip.
Thinning Latex Paint with Water
Latex paint is a water based paint that needs to be thinned to be used in a Wagner sprayer. Dilute latex paint with water according to the instructions on the paint container. Latex paint that is too thick will clog the Wagner sprayer, but too much water in the paint will drastically slow drying time, especially in humid conditions. Too much water will also reduce the hiding qualities of latex paint, and you will have to apply several coats with the Wagner sprayer instead of one.
Thinning Latex Paint with Acrylic Polymer Resin
Acrylic polymer resin is a latex paint additive that increases the paint's flow properties and does not reduce the durability of latex paint. Use up to 1 quart of acrylic polymer resin per gallon of paint, starting with one pint and increasing the amount until the paint flows smoothly from the Wagner sprayer.
Spraying Latex Paint
Use the proper tip and pressure to ensure a smooth, even finish. Practice on cardboard until you are satisfied with the outcome. Wagner sprayer tips range in size, and a .019 size tip is generally used for latex paint. When spraying, start the hand-sweeping motion before pressing the trigger and release the trigger just before the end of the hand motion. The span of hand motion is usually about 12 inches. While spraying, start with a low pressure and gradually increase until the paint exits the sprayer in an even fan with no thick lines at the edges of the spray pattern.
Textured Medium
When using a Wagner sprayer to apply a textured coating such as block filler or a ceramic insulating paint, be sure to remove the filters. Filters are usually located at the end of the dip tube, in the handle and behind the tip, depending on the model of sprayer.
Warning
The average psi at the tip of a Wagner sprayer is 3000. This range of pressure can easily cause a severe laceration of the skin and may even inject paint into the skin. Keep hands and fingers away from the tip of the sprayer when in use.
