Set Up an Ice Cream Maker
Making homemade ice cream is a special summer treat. Unfortunately, that ice cream maker is usually stored away for most of the year, instructions are lost, and when it is time to use the ice cream maker, we can't recall how it goes together. Most traditional ice cream makers are set up in the same way.
Instructions
1. Plan to fill the metal canister with your ice cream mixture. If you don't have a recipe for ice cream, look for one in a cookbook or online. There are many homemade ice cream recipes to choose from. Note the size of your canister, to help you measure how much of the recipe to make. Do not overfill, as the mixture will expand.
2. Fit the paddle inside the canister before you add the ice cream. The paddle has a narrow protrusion on one end that should be on top.
3. Pour the ice cream mixture into the canister after the paddle is properly inserted. The paddle will fit into an indentation on the bottom of the inside of the canister, and the narrow protrusion will poke from the top of the canister. Do not overfill, as the ice cream will expand when frozen.
4. Fit the lid on the canister, with the protrusion fitting through the hole in the middle of the lid. The paddle should be able to move freely from side to side if twisted by the top protrusion.
5. Set the canister into the tub of the ice cream maker. It will fit in the center. After the ice cream maker is put together, layers of ice and rock salt will be added in the space between the canister and the walls of the tub. Ice and rock salt will be continually added during the freezing process.
6. Align the top of the paddle with the indentation at the bottom of the motor mechanism. The motor mechanism will fit onto the top of the ice cream maker.
7. Secure the motor mechanism onto the top of the machine. It will typically snap into place. Remember to center the protrusion from the paddle into the bottom side of the motor component. This is how the paddle will move to stir the ice cream mixture.
8. Plug the ice cream maker in when you are ready. The machine will stop moving when the ice cream is hard, as the paddle will no longer be able to move.
9. Remove the canister from the tub. Remove the paddle from the ice cream and replace lid. There should be a small cork that fits into the hole of the lid.
