Oil paintings look great on the wall, but they are easily damaged by direct sunlight, moisture and improper handling. Art lovers know that the delicacy of oil paintings is part of their charm. You don't need to be a curator to appreciate the importance of optimal storage conditions to maintain the integrity of paintings. After all, restoration of the oil painting can be expensive and unsatisfactory. As long as you take simple precautions, your oil paintings can be safely stored.
Instructions
1. Set up the storage area by cleaning, drying and airing the room. Make sure there are no insects or insect droppings.
2. Wear a pair of white cotton gloves. Dust the surface of the oil paintings carefully with a dry, clean, soft dust cloth.
3. Examine the frames of the paintings. Make sure the paintings are firmly attached to their frames.
4. Pad the paintings on both sides with polystyrene (sold in stores as Jablo) to protect the oil, frames and canvases from scratches, dust and moisture.
5. Move the oil paintings to the storage room. Place the framed paintings upright with the polystyrene in between the paintings. Store unframed oil paintings singly, flat on the floor between sheets of polystyrene.
