Import Pictures On Vista

You can tag and organize the photos you add to your computer.

Vista comes with tools that let you download the pictures from your digital camera. One fast and effective method for importing pictures in Vista is to use Windows Photo Gallery, a photo editor that it installed with the operating system. In addition to downloading your photos, this program will automatically name them and organize them in folders for later browsing and editing. Windows Photo Gallery is also customizable, allowing you to control how it imports your pictures.

Instructions

1. Click the "Start" button, then type "Windows Photo Gallery" in the Start search box. Select the file from the resulting list.

2. Click "File" and "Options." Select the "Import" tab. Beside "Settings for," select "Cameras." Beside "Import to," click "Browse" to select a folder for saving your photos. By "Folder name," select the format for the name of the pictures folder. Choose whether you'd like to organize your photos by date imported, date taken, date taken range or just by your chosen name tag. By "File name," select whether you'd like to simply give the photos a tag, or organize them by the original file name on your camera. Ensure that the check marks beside "Prompt for a tag on import," "Rotate pictures on import" and "Open Windows Photo Gallery after import" are checked. Click "OK."

3. Connect your digital camera into the computer by USB and turn the camera on. Alternatively, you can insert the camera's memory card into a memory card reader connected to your computer. Click "File" and then "Import from Camera or Scanner." If your camera or memory card doesn't appear, ensure that it's securely attached to your computer, then select "Refresh." Select your camera or memory card from the list, then click "Import."

4. Type a name in the "Tag these pictures" field in the "Importing Pictures and Videos" window. For best results, select a short name that's related to the subject of the photos. Click "Import." After the import starts, you may select the check mark beside "Erase after importing" to delete the pictures from your digital camera.

5. Select the folder with the tag name you selected in the left pane in Windows Photo Gallery. Double-click on a picture to view it or edit it. You can also click the buttons at the bottom of the Photo Gallery window to play a slide show of all of the imported pictures.
