Use Packing Peanuts For Drainage Inside A Planter

Packing peanuts are used as drainage material in a planter.

Soils that do not drain well will lead to a plant suffering from root rot. Using drainage material on the bottom of your planter will lessen and possibly eliminate the chance of your plants suffering this fate. Although there are many drainage materials to choose from, packing peanuts are ideal. This is because these plastic foam pieces are so lightweight that transporting your planter when needed won't require you to have strong muscles.

Instructions

1. Pour 1 inch of packing peanuts inside a flower pot that is no larger than 6 inches. Flower pots bigger than 12 inches will require 3 inches of packing peanuts. Anything in between should contain 2 inches.

2. Fill your planter halfway to the top with the soil of your choice.

3. Place your plant in the middle of the planter on top of the soil. Add additional soil to completely cover all of your plant's roots.

4. Pour water over your plant's soil until it becomes moist. Your plant is ready to display in the sun or shade, depending on the type of plant and what its needs are.
