Photograph Eyes

Photographs can reveal much about a person, especially if the photograph focuses on the subject's eyes. To properly photograph the eyes, you must use the right equipment and have a subject capable of expressing emotion during the portrait session.

Instructions

1. Tell the subject why you want to photograph his eyes. Explain the artistic aspect of the photograph and the emotional impact that it will make.

2. Drape a scarf or bright and vivid piece of cloth around the person's face and head to reveal only the subject's eyes. If the subject does not want this prop, have her dress in a nice simple outfit so that her eyes can stand out.

3. Pay attention to the available lighting. If photographing outdoors, focus on the catchlights, or highlights, in the subject's eyes. You can create this effect by having the subject stand in shade with the sun behind her.

4. Avoid using flash so that the subject's eyes look natural and to avoid the red eye syndrome.

5. Initiate conversation with the subject. Talk about things that elicit emotional responses, such as asking the subject about the birth of a child or a first day on the job. Focus on the eyes and click away.

6. Bring the subject up close and fill the frame with only her eyes.
