The Volunteer State is also a good place to catch a comedy show. Tennessee has myriad comedy clubs throughout the state, providing a change of pace from concerts.
The Comedy Catch
The Comedy Catch has hosted a who’s who of comedians since it opened in 1985, including Tommy Chong, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jeff Foxworthy and Jerry Seinfeld. The Comedy Catch is an 18 and over club, with a $5 purchase minimum, as of July 2010. It offers a full menu that has drinks, appetizers, burgers and entries like steak. It does not have an open mic night.

Side Splitters Comedy Club
Side Splitters Comedy Club features nationally known comedians such as Jim Breuer, a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, and Mark Cooper, who was on "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper." Side Splitters has an open mic night usually once a month. Interested comedians must sign up in advance. It also occasionally hosts seminars for aspiring comics, such as a workshop that teaches comedians market themselves to club owners. The club is 18 and over with a two-drink minimum.

Zanies Comedy Night Club
Zanies Comedy Night Club attracts big-name comedians, including Nick Cannon, Michael Ian Black, Tracy Morgan and Sinbad. Zanies also accommodates up and comers with an open mic night typically held twice a month. Participants should note that they’re required to bring four guests to the show. The club is 18 and over, with a two-purchase minimum of either a drink or food item. The menu includes appetizers, hamburgers, sandwiches, wings and desserts.

Skidz Comedy Club
Skidz Comedy Club has performances Tuesday nights at Neil's Bar & Grill. Shows include open mic night and "Best of Memphis," which feature local comedians. Occasional special shows take place on Fridays and Saturdays. Performances also sometimes take place at Minglewood Hall. Check the club’s web site for upcoming shows.
