Use real stained glass as inspiration for your paper project.
Let your creative side run wild as you use construction paper and colored tissue paper to make a simulated stained glass window. For an adult, this project can serve as a template for an actual glass piece. For a child, the instructions and designs can be simplified to keep the craft from being too challenging. This is a lovely idea for a Sunday school class, an art class or a rainy Saturday afternoon at home.
Instructions
1. Cut a sheet of black construction paper the size you want for your finished project. Construction paper is readily available in 9-by-12-inch and 12-by-18-inch sheets.
2. Fold the paper in half vertically so the fold runs from top to bottom. Draw an arc from the fold to the outside edge of the paper, if you want the final piece to be arched. Cut the arc so that the top of the paper is rounded, like an arch. Unfold the paper to make sure you like the shape.
3. Refold the paper and begin drawing shapes that intersect the folded edge of the paper. Leave at least 1/4 inch of space between the shapes to create an even border around each opening. Work your way out from the fold, creating additional shapes. Be sure to leave a border around the three sides without the fold so your artwork will have a sturdy outer frame.
4. Begin carefully cutting out your shapes using scissors or an art knife with a razor blade. Keep the paper aligned so your design remains symmetrical.
5. Open the paper periodically to see the shapes that are created and make any needed adjustments to your design.
6. Study the finished shapes after all have been cut out. Arrange the colored tissue paper to decide the most attractive placement.
7. Trace the shape of the openings lightly onto the tissue paper and then cut the paper slightly larger to allow room for the glue. Alternatively, you can place a small bead of glue on the borders around the opening and glue on the tissue paper. After the glue dries, use the art knife to carefully cut away the extra tissue. Avoid cutting through the black paper if you use this method.
