Create A Community Float

Many floats can be created using a hay wagon.

Many communities often host parades, for a holiday celebration or a special event. Probably one of the most festive things about a parade are the floats. Floats are usually decorated according to the theme of the parade, such as the holiday the community is celebrating or special event. If you are wanting to make a float to enter in a parade, there are a few steps you can follow in order to successfully make your own float.

Instructions

1. Plan a theme. For instance, if making a float for an Independence Day parade, design a float into a replica of Independence Hall, designating a few individuals to dress as the men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

2. Obtain a trailer. Many homemade floats are created on hay trailers, which is ideal for constructing a float.

3. Construct the skirt frame. To start with, you will need to build a skirt frame using 2X2 pieces of wood. Using hinges, fasten the frame to the trailer bed. The skirt frame is for hiding the wheels; however, be sure the skirt frame hangs 16 inches above the ground.

4. Decorate the float. Attach a floral sheeting or other decorative fabric over the skirt frame and use a staple gun to secure the fabric around the edge of the trailer deck. You can also outline the trailer deck by securing garland or streamers for a more festive look.

5. Add centerpieces. Decorate your float with the necessary theme. If your float is meant to promote an organization or business in your community, be creative. For example, if you are trying to promote your church, have the church's youth group come together, which will let spectators see there are activities, such as the youth group, in which they can be involved. Consider creating a large sign with the name of your church or business and staple it to the skirt frame.
