Stage an Art Exhibition
Artists often set up their own art exhibits to further personalize the gallery for an opening. There are several things to consider when staging your own art exhibiton. You must present yourself as an artist, yet also manage the business aspects of organizing an event. Good preparation, planning and a clear idea of what sort of exhibition you want to present will increase the chances of a successful staging.
Instructions
1. Purchase liability insurance to protect yourself from disaster. Contact an insurance broker who deals in public and product liability. Some brokers may allow you to purchase one-off coverage that is good for an exhibition, as opposed to purchasing a year of coverage.
2. Locate a venue to hold an exhibition. Contact gallery owners, restaurants, cafes or anywhere else that you think might make a good location for you to hold an exhibit.
3. Negotiate an agreement with the owner of the venue where you want to hold your exhibit. Show her your work and explain why you want to use her establishment. Agree upon a rate for commissions, duration of display and any discounts that might be made on artwork by the venue. Clarify any additional legal concerns the venue owner might have.
4. Prepare your artwork before the exhibition. Take pictures of artwork so that you have a record of the piece. Attach frames to the artwork if necessary. Use D-rings and nylon cord as necessary to secure mounting points.
5. Measure the space with a tape measure before you mount the artwork. Plan hang your work to achieve the maximum desired effect. Or if, displaying sculptures, or other pieces that do not require mounting, set up areas for each piece and consider marking off the space to protect the artwork.
6. Organize the sales process, along with a labeling and cataloging system for your artwork. This will be needed to keep track of what pieces have sold and which ones haven't. Use red stickers to mark sold pieces. Credit card machines should be provided if they are not available at the venue.
7. Promote your exhibit to local businesses. Ask around at businesses for possible sponsorships. Arrange to have the exhibit videoed or photographed. Also, write a speech to give at the exhibit.
