Identify Different Bouquet Shapes

Simple factors help determine a flower arrangement's shape.

Flower arrangements come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. However, if you've always been a bit stumped about what your favorite arrangement is called, you're in luck. Identifying the shapes of flower arrangements is actually pretty easy, once you know a few of the basic principles to look for.

Instructions

1. Look at the flower arrangement you want to identify. Observe the structural elements and how the arrangement was assembled. Make note of the size and shape of the container in which the arrangement is located. Determine if it is tall, long or wide.

2. Stand back and look at the overall shape and flow of lines in the arrangement. Refer back to a list of typical arrangements and see if they fit with what you're looking at.

Horizontal arrangements tend to be more wide than tall, in shallow containers and use flowers that hold their lines like lavender.

Vertical arrangements use thinner, taller containers and give the impression of a strong vertical line, using flowers that are stiff with long stems like roses and tulips.

Crescent arrangements resemble a waxing or waning moon. Typically, the flowers are wired into place or have a natural curve.

Triangular arrangements are symmetrical with two stems stretching out horizontally and one vertically. They share a lot of the same traits of horizontal and vertical arrangements.

Oval arrangements are the most typical arrangement, known for their circular, dome-like shape.

Hogarth curve arrangements have the visual look of a lazy "S." The flowers will either follow this shape or be wired into place. Filler flowers are normally placed in the center and have a naturally graceful look to them.

3. Consider the factors presented in Steps 1 and 2 to figure out the shape of your flower arrangement.
