Painters know that there are many different kinds of brushes available for the different results desired on canvas. An artist who uses just one brush often ends up with artwork that is flat and boring. Use these instructions for different brush techniques when painting with acrylics to add dimension and style to a painting.
Instructions
1. Prepare the workstation. Set up a canvas or paper on an easel. Put different colored paints on a palette as well as some water to rinse the brushes. Have some paper towels handy to blot and dry the brushes.
2. Start with the scumble brush, which has short bristles. The scumble brush is used for painting a section with an opaque or semi-opaque deposit of color.
3. Use a tapping motion to add paint to the scumble brush. Add several colors, dark as well as light, to give depth to the painting.
4. Use a tapping motion to apply the paint onto the canvas. Try varying amounts of pressure to see what different results occur. The harder the pressure applied, the thicker the paint deposits.
5. Rinse the brush well in water or an acrylic paint cleaner. Make sure no paint remains on the brush as it shortens the life of the brush. Wipe the wet brush in the direction of the bristles with a clean paper towel to remove excess water and paint.
