Florence, the capital city of Tuscany, is home for its medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. Instructions
1. Walk across the Ponte Vecchio. The Ponte Vecchio, which spans the Arno River, is the oldest bridge in Florence--and the only one that remains from medieval times. The bridge is lined with shops, mostly jewelry shops. While shopping isn't free, the stroll across this unique bridge won't cost you any lira.
2. Visit the Duomo. The Duomo, actually the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the symbol of Florence. The red-domed cathedral was constructed in the fourteenth century with the dome added by Brunellesci during the Renaissance. Highlights include the bronze doors, the 44 stained glass windows and the many paintings and sculptures by the finest artists of the Renaissance. Admission to the Duomo is free. Visitors must cover their arms and legs and women must cover their heads to enter the church.
3. Explore the Basilica di Santa Croce. This church, located near the Duomo, is best known for housing the tombs of some of Florence's most illustrious citizens. Michelangelo is buried there, as are Dante, Gallileo and Machiavelli. Admission is free.
4. Marvel at the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo. This famous square offers one of the best views of Florence and the Arno River. The square is dedicated to the artist, Michelangelo, and replicas of many of his works are scattered about the site. Drive to the top or make the steep, 20-minute climb from the river.
