Marching band uniforms often are based on current or historical military style uniforms or new marching band uniform designs. Here are a few ways to choose the best headwear for your marching band.
Instructions
1. Choose a uniform style for your marching band. This may seem like common sense, but choosing headwear before selecting the "look" that your band is trying to achieve while in the field can have disastrous results as several styles of headwear within the same look are typically used within one marching band to help manage instrument/headwear functionality issues.
2. Consider color, style, material breathability and wear, ease of use, accessories, school colors, mascots or other symbols, and functionality when choosing marching band uniforms. When considering style, keep in mind that a marching band, like its military counterpart, is a unit and as a unit should appear uniform throughout from the percussion section to the brass.
3. Select a hat(s) or other headwear that matches the color and style of your chosen uniforms as well as the type of instrument being played. For example, you do not want to choose a wide or tall helmet for sousaphone players wide or very tall helmets can make it difficult to wrap the sousaphone around the body. Another headgear type, wildly plumed feathered helmets, can also prove difficult as feathers can fly free of housing on extremely windy days causing distractions or blocking music sheets.
